Report of the Candidacy Committee

The members of the Candidacy Committee are: Bp Dan Selbo, The Rev Dr David Wendel, Asst to the Bp, (Jacksonville, FL}, The Rev Dr Eric Riesen, President NALS, (Ambridge, PA),The Rev Evan McClanahan, (Houston, TX,), The Rev Jerry Merkouris (Sioux Falls, SD), The Rev Jennifer Gold (Helotes, TX),The Rev Teshome Deingede (Piekeringron, OH), Diaconal Minister Lila DeWaal (Outlook, Saskatchewan, Canada), the Rev Marshall Hahn (St. Olaf, Iowa), the Rev Jill Stellman (Richfield Springs, New York), the Rev Christopher Metze (Monroe, North Carolina), The Rev Stephane Kalonji (Rosenberg, TX.), The Rev Garrett Siemsen (Valencia, CA.), Becky Siefert, administrative manager, (Columbus, OH) and The Rev Tim Loehrke, Chair, (Warren, OH.)

Together, we work to support future leaders of the NALC. In partnership with the Bishop, his staff, mission district deans, the NALS, and internship supervisors. We seek to prayerfully guide qualified candidates as they move through the educational process and discern God’s call to ministry. The committee oversees internship site development and placement. We also review applications to the NALC Theological Education Scholarship Fund, giving our recommendations to the NALC executive staff. In addition to our work with seminarians, the committee also works in the colloquy process for ordained pastors seeking to enter into the NALC from non-Lutheran traditions.

The Candidacy Committee meets each year in March, July and October to conduct interviews for candidates at various stages in the candidacy process. Whether coming to us for an entrance, endorsement or approval decision, or perhaps a developmental interview for additional guidance, the committee seeks to aid the candidate’s discernment process and theological development while at the same time bearing in mind the requirements and expectations of the NALC. Through the three milestones of the candidacy process, candidates are reviewed to determine their progress using seminary transcripts, candidacy essays, internship evaluations and individual conversations with members of the committee that are focused on biblical, theological and the Lutheran confessions. Personal and pastoral references, as well as full criminal background checks and a psychological evaluation, are required of all NALC ministry candidates.

The numbers listed below are the results of the Candidacy Committee gatherings in October 2021, March 2022 and July 2022. The Candidacy Committee did not meet in July of 2022 because there were no candidates eligible to meet with.;

Entrance: 20, Those candidates that are enrolled into the NALS Network and have begun their studies for an MDiv.

Endorsed 7, Those Candidates that have successfully completed 60 credit hours towards their MDiv. and are eligible for internship or are at an internship site.

Approved 6, Those Candidates who have successfully completed internship, completed or will complete their MDiv and are eligible to enter the first call process.

Work continues to progress in meeting the 2020 Vision Statement concerning future pastor’s for the NALC. We continue to give praise and thanks to God for His faithfulness in calling men and women to serve in Word and Sacrament within the NALC. We continue to pray for those who are discerning God’s call.
